The best river fishing is generally from May to November in the Mzimvubu river.  Many species of fish live in this sub tropical region but the main river fish are Kob (salmon), Garrick & Grunter.  During the spring & summer months Carp can be fished.  You can fish in the sea all year round, where you can catch Blacktail, Mussel Cracker, Bronze Bream, and many, many more. Fishing Tips

Where to Fish near Port St Johns?

Purple Indigo gives you exclusive access to one of the best river fishing spots 'Kob Hole' or the 'Deep Hole'on the Mzimvubu.    

The riverside at Pi has a covered fishing spot, with a braai, table and chairs and is lit at night.

Purple Indigo has a slipway & a jetty.  If you want to launch your boat please let us know in advance.  You must have a skippers license.  

Each unit either has its own chest freezer or a shared chest freezer on the balcony.

We sell in our small shop sardine, prawn & squid as bait, you can also buy charcoal, wood and firelighters.  Swimming, sand and mud prawns can be bought locally.

We can help organise a ghillie for you, local guys that we know.  We do not allow other ghillies on the property, this is for your security & ours. Day Rate: R120 (8 Hours) Night Rate: R150 (8 Hours)

You do need a fishing license, this can be purchased in town at the post office.  You will need to bring your passport or ID.  Don't forget bag limits, sizes & seasons, fish for the future.

Please think about what you leave behind.  Hooks and fishing line can be a death sentence for animals & wildlife.  Please clean up behind you & put your rubbish in the bin or take it home.  Let's keep Port St Johns beautiful.

Ferry Point

Ferry Point is a good place to fish the river mouth.  Good place for throwing drop shot.  Ferry Point is about a 10 minute drive from Purple Indigo.

The Big Tree

The Big Tree is a famous fishing spot on the Ferry Point Road where you can fish the Mzimvubu.  This is a popular spot so get there early for a place.

Poenskop

Purple Indigo is about a 20 minute drive along the Ferry Point Road to Poenskop.  A popular place to fish off the rocks, get there early as the wind can pick up later on in the day.

Silaka Nature Reserve

Silaka Nature Reserve or 3rd Beach is a beautiful place to fish well worth the R25 entrance fee, no night fishing here as the gates will close.

Ntafufu River

Beautiful fishing spot, great for the Mangrove Snapper or Rock Salmon.  You can also hire canoes here.

Variety Bay

At the river mouth of the Ntafufu river, famous for Black Tail & Mussel Cracker and a large variety of fish.  You will need a 4/4 to get there.

BrazenHead

Garrick, Shad, Kob are the fish of choice here.  About 20kms from Port St Johns.
